Monkey Blood

Are you old enough to remember monkey blood? Do they still make that medicine? When I was young I always had scraped knees. I wanted monkey blood on them. The kind of medicine that didn't burn. Today we were walking between the medical building and the hospital and there was something spilled on the floor. It was a light red but not dark enough to be human blood so John said that looks like monkey blood. Then he ask me if I remember monkey blood. We had a good laugh about that and said how the young people probably doesn't know what monkey blood is. Maybe they call it by the correct name which I don't know how to spell but I know someone will tell me. As we were leaving the building we struck up a conversation with a man who had been to the Heart doctor in the building. we were parked at our favorite place that we always get by the door if it is available. The man and John and I were all three trying to get into the same car. He was looking at us and we were looking at him with a puzzled look on our faces. I finally said sir I think you are trying to get into the wrong car. He looked across the way and there was a car that looked very much like John's. He said I wondered why you was trying to get into my car. Senior citizens, you have to laugh to keep from crying.

I never heard it called monkey blood, but like DD, I googled and found out it's mercurochrome. I do remember that.

I guess Monkey blood must be a south Texas saying for people to tell their kids as John and I were both born and raised here. We both ate Roadrunner for boils when we were kids too and we didn't know each other until we were grown. Paula

I remember mercurochrome. They never called it Monkey Blood where we live. But from now on, that's what I'll refer to it as. I chuckled about the car situation. The other day I was carrying some packages and tried sticking my key in the trunk, so I could put them inside. Key didn't work in lock. I got all upset. Tried the car doors, nothing. I didn't know WHAT to do. Then I looked down at the license plate. WRONG NUMBERS. WRONG CAR. Mine was parked a couple spaces away. LOL Take care. Hope you have a healthy and happy New Year.

I remember Monkey blood very well. It can't just be a south Texas thing 'cause I grew up in West Texas. I remember that I much preferred Monkey blood to iodine or merthiolate because it didn't sting and burn. My mom always said "If it doesn't burn, it's not doing any good". I won't talk about the senior moments because I have far too many of them these days!

Pauline, you are so right, you have to laugh to keep from crying. I know what monkey blood is. It is the opposite of iodine.lol I can spell that!!! If you readmy blog today you will see why maybe Bohemians are made to be stubborn. Problem is once all is solved, they need to quit being so stubborn.lol

Texas is a big place and growing up in East Texas I've never heard of monkey blood either. (You know about monkey blood, I know about sweet gum trees!) I too am thinking mercurochrome. Do they still even make it? Probably discovered it causes cancer or something!

You must mean mercurachrome. We used to use it for scrapes and cuts. Because it has mercury in it, the company that makes it stopped selling it in the U.S.

I grew up in Dallas and was always being painted with monkey blood. My wife grew up in Dallas also, but never heard it called that. All of our parents grew up in east Texas. I guess you just had to be "lucky" to know about monkey blood.

Mercurachrome or Merthiolate=Monkey Blood. Best stuff ever, actually just used some. Got our bottle in Mexico about 15 years ago. But its still works. We pretty much just use it for cracks in the skin.
