Beefalo, maybe?

On one of our recent treks we stopped on a country road where there were buffalo mixed with cattle. Well they were on the same property but as you can see the buffalo are mostly together. I've never noticed buffalo having such short tails. John thinks they may be going to try to cross them with the cattle and have beefalo to eat or sell. I understand it is supposed to be leaner, so therefore better for you. Anyone know about this?

I've heard of Beefalo but really don't know anything about them...except what I've heard, leaner meat and more meat per animal. It would be interesting to find out more.

Accidental crosses were noticed as far back as 1749 in the southern English colonies of North America. Cattle and buffalo were first intentionally crossbred during the mid-19th century. Charles Goodnight was one of the first to succeed, and called his hybrid cattalo.

my history lesson of the day

I have had buffalo meat. Never heard of them being breeded with cattle for the meat, though. But you know it's probably happened. If you get to try any, let us know how it tastes. Take care.

Hi Paula. I have heard of beefalo, but have never eaten it. It is highly recommended for helping to lower cholesterol, being so much leaner than beef. It is government approved and sold in some markets.

I love your pictures, header and sidebar ones. Take care, Paula.

It seems I have heard of this in Texas but not sure if I read it or just heard someone talking about it.
What part of Texas do you live in.
I am half way between Austin and Houston.
That ole shed in your headboard reminded me of one that was just torn down out here.
Hope you have a wonderful week
Love
Maggie

I have heard that buffalo is much leaner than beef. Our grocery store sold it and there was just no fat streaked through it. Very expensive. It was really red. My bohunk listened to me gripe all winter and guess what, I bet he doesn't go back down there very soon. I am not a happy camper over him right now, either.

When I was in college (back in the stone age) Dad bought a buffalo bull to breed to our Angus cattle.

God bless ya and have yourself a sunshiny kinda day sweetie!!! :o)

Hi, A beefalo is a cross between a buffalo and any breed of beef cattle but it takes 3 generations of crossings to get to a "fullblood" beefalo. First cross is a bison hybrid. A beefalo is actually 3/8 bison and 5/8 beef cattle. Great meat! Low cholesterol, low fat, high in protein, tastes very similar to bison meat. We have raised both buffalo and beefalo for the past 26 years! Check out our website www.meyerbuffalofarm.com and also a great website that tells all about beefalo and has some really great pictures at www.beefalocentral.com.

There are beefalo ranches here in Indiana. I've never tried it, but it's supposed to be pretty good.
