Icicles On The Windmill

Funny how one feeling can trigger another and bring back long ago memories. Last night it was hot in my room so I started thinking about the coldest I've ever been in my life. Very young maybe in about third grade I spent the night in the country with a girl named Billie Jean. Thats another thing kids had double names back then. We had Billie Jean, Bobbie Lou, Bobbie Lee, Jimmie Nell, Freddie Mae and then there was the ines like Pauline, Nellene, Ilene, Charlene. Anyway that night was the most miserable night I have ever spent. I was sooo cold I couldn't sleep. I think the cold spell hit in the night and I was too shy to wake anyone up to ask for cover. When we got up next morning there were big icicles hanging from the little platform around the windmill half way down the windmill. I had never seen icicles that long before or since and I never spent another night with Billie Jean even though there was one good memory from the visit. Her Mama made the best homemade jellyrolls.

growing up in wisconsin in a very old farmhouse, heated by a giant wood furnace in the basement, we often woke to thick frost inside the windows and ice-cold hardwood flooring. :)

Hoping those chilly memories can help cool you in this heat!

Yes, Pauline, it does do me good when a crook gets sprayed with dye. I never wanted to spend the night with friends because I was painfully shy.

There are many folks who just cannot trouble folk and will suffer thru. Yep, you strike me as the type. I have a tendency to do that.

Funny how those memories come flooding back when called or keyed.

We were warm last night, but today we have rain to cool everything down.

Funny, although I've skiied in Lake Tahoe, Vail and Aspen, the coldest I've ever been was in the Florida Everglades.

We were teenagers (read unprepared) and it was 38 degrees with a north wind of 25 mph. That wind cut like a knife and we had nothing but blankets to sleep on.

That is some picture you paint of those super long icicles. The thought of icicles has cooled me right off. I used to be called Terry Lou. So I understand those double names. LOL

Great post! My sister Lois' best friend's name was Betty Jean. I can remember spending the night with a friend and being too shy to ask for more cover. I hope you didn't wind up getting a cold. My Mom used to make home made jellyrolls -- so good!

Whaddya mean people used to have double names? They still do in East Texas. The DA from Carthage who prosecuted Bernie Tiede was Danny Buck something, my 70-year-old cousin is still called Jimmie Ray (and yes, it's Jimmie, not Jimmy). In fact, most of my relatives have double names, Ray Nell (that's a female), Willie Lloyd, Jane Carolyn, Joe Buck, Johnnie Fay (another female). Of course, we've got a little hillbilly blood up in these parts and aren't as sophisticated as you folks who live down near San Antone. I got tickled at a visiting preacher at church a few Sundays back who was talking about folks who live in Dal-les!
