Donkeys In The News

Our paper had two donkey news items today. Unusual as we don't normally have one. The first was a very unfortunate story. A man from a berg in San Antonio who has livestock on a place in our county was attacked by his donkey and died. He was found with his pick-up still running and the door open with him under a small building where irrigation pipe was stored. I'm thinking maybe he was trying to get away from the donkey and either died from his injuries or from a heart attack under the building. The second article was a picture of a little girl feeding her pet minature donkey. A very sweet picture. Ironic they were both in the paper today. For the last few years it has kind of become a fad to have one, two, or three, donkeys on your place. Pets and to protect from coyotes. However I know the donkeys can become very mean to calves. I've known people who had to get rid of their donkey because it was so mean to their calves they might be killed. I like donkeys and always ohh and aww when we pass some on the country roads but John never has wanted donkeys on his place.

i had read that article on-line about the guy being killed by an overly territorial donkey - presumed to be guarding a female. sad.

How tragic! I've always like donkeys too but I now have a new respect for them.

Very territorial, donkeys are. So sad to hear about that fella who lost his life due to one. Like Jill, I have a new respect for them. Now I'm glad John stayed away from getting one.

It is bad enough to have a goat in our neighborhood. I don't think I would want a donkey. And Oh yes, we have 3 chickens that just moved in across the alley and down a ways.
