A Deer Blind but Not Ours

Someone ask what is a blind. This picture is a deer blind with me standing in front of it. I don't know about other states but here in Texas it is a little house/hut where a hunter sits to await a deer to come by so he or she can shoot it. Hunting? I know strange way to hunt but hopefully and everyone I know that hunts and kills eat all the meat or gives it to someone who does. There are all kind of deer blinds. Some have carpet, some are decorated in cow colors and on and on. Mel (my deceased husband) had one on his grandmother's ranch west of San Antonio which is now in San Antonio. He let his run down, it was old and the roof leaked. It had mice and daddylongleg spiders in it. It was fun to go with him and watch for the deer to come out but I didn't enjoy his shooting it. I tried once for one with a beautiful rack of horns and couldn't pull the trigger. I think they call that buck fever. It was quiet and peaceful and a nice time to think but it seemed everytime my stomach would pick that time to want to growl. Mel would give me a dirty look so I would have to press into my stomach as hard as I could to get it to calm down because I didn't want him to tell me to stay home. Deer can hear well and spot anything that moves and then alerts the other deer by sticking their white tail up and run while flagging it. This deer blind shown here is on the back forty where John's cattle roam part of the time.

My hubby had a deer blind that was barn red...someone built it for him. I guess the deer just looked at it as a tiny barn. We had it in our back yard for the kids to play in during the part of the year that wasn't deer season. Hubby has asked me to go deer hunting with him, but I refuse on the grounds that he might shoot me. Not accidentally either....because if a deer came out, I would stand up and scream, "Run for your life!!!" and I don't think Hubby would be responsible for his actions....so I stay home. :) We don't eat deer anymore...used to get it made into sausage...but we do give it away to a single mom that we know, who also loves to get dove during dove season. You'd think we had given her a million dollars.

lol...the Costa Plenty Ranch...that was funny!

I enjoy reading your blog because I'm always learning things about the country. I've never heard of a deer blind and I don't think I've ever seen one.
If I did, I probably thought it was an outhouse.....

The rules are so different in different states. I understand in Texas there are NO PUBLIC land. It is all owned and that hunting is by permission only. I am guessing that the owner who leases to John allows others the right to hunt.
Has John ever lost a cow to a mistaken shot? Just curious.

Folks are getting quiesier(?) about hunting, but it is still a way of life for a minority and the only meat supply for many more. I am still partial to rabbit and squirrel although the only way I would get it now is 'road kill', and I do think about it. LOL.
