Almost On Target

John needed to buy feed, but he wanted to show me the ranch he went to Saturday with his family to buy a show calf for his granddughter. He thought the country road to that ranch would come out eventually at Poth, Texas where he buys his feed. So we turned on Byrd road and found the very big ranch easily. The wife does the ranching, I guess mostly raising steers to sell to kids for show calves for competition. The husband does the farming, I guess mostly growing feed for the calves his wife raises. We had no excuse to go into the gates so we just took in the sights as we passed slowly down the country road. John says okay we're going to stay straight on this road and I think it will come out where we need to be so we will kill two birds with one stone. We passed many crossroads and John wanted me to tell him the name of everyone of them I wish they would still call roads by names instead of numbers but I'm sure the numbers make it easier for strangers to find a certain road. We passed many large ranches, some with cattle and some with goats and almost all of them had a large stock tank for water for the animals. Most had nice gates with good fences but this road left something to be desired in some places. Rough and dusty from the caliche. Speed limit signs in the parts that were really rough. After we had traveled about an hour John was getting antsy. He admitted he really didn't have an idea where we were. It wasn't bothering me except the thought went through my head "does he have a spare tire?" No houses or businesses (probably ranch houses down lanes where we couldn't see) and I think we met two cars the whole time. John ask me how I would like to live way out there? My answer was they must only go to town once a week for groceries or they have the money to buy their wife a new SUV every year because I wouldn't want to drive my little truck on this road all time. When we finally came to a paved road we still didn't know where we were but started seeing big houses so we knew we were near a town. Not even a sign with the name and before not a sign with the number of miles to said town. It really got to John that he didn't know where he was and not that far away from home. When he has traveled all over all his life of farming and ranching. I told him if I see the Hermann Sons lodge hall we will know this is Poth. About the time I spotted it we began to realize that was Lyssy and Eckles feed store up ahead and on the corner. The country road had come out at Falls City, Texas and we were just about seven miles south of where we buy feed. John swears he isn't driving this road again. I say there were lots of crossroads we could explore.

My husband will deliberately get lost so he can find his way home or someplace new. I bet you got a little worried before you started to see signs of civilization, though.

It sounds like you were in the Texas Bermuda Triangle for awhile. It's surprisingly easy to get lost on isolated country roads....

Yeah that is embarrassing for us smart men to be LOST!!! Usually I just lie and say I meant to go this way, but somehow she knows I am lying. She has a built in lie detector!! It ain't fair! LOL

glad john was right after all - but i completely understand that unsettled feeling of not knowing where you are - or worse if something happens.

Men don't like not being in control..and if you have no idea where you are, you certainly are not in control. My hubby is the same way. He doesn't want to get lost when we are out hunting barns and such, so he stays to roads he knows like the back of his hand or he stays on the main roads. Glad you didn't end up on the other side of the border!!!

Sounds like you had quite a trip..Takes me back to when Marty's dad was alive and we would go out riding around in the country and one day I thought he was looking at road numbers and I asked him where we were, He said he had no idea. we made it home eventually.
