The Hummingbird Guard

I have been a feeder of the hummingbirds everywhere I have lived but we have a new kid on the block and is it mean. I know they flitter and chase each other but eventually they all get to eat. This hummer sits on a leafless small branch as close to the feeder as it can get and will not let another hummer eat so they have to eat at the back feeder. They prefer to go back and forth from front to back. We have never had a hummer that looks like this one. I know some have a little red stripe under their neck but this one is red on it's head and wings. When it flies it looks like a mini mini cardinal. I can watch it from John's recliner out the storm door. It sits and preens and watches. It seems to be turning it's head from left to right watching all directions for the enemy. It moved in and took over. John says we are going to have to shoot it, kidding of course, but really a hummingbird hog?

I'm fascinated with hummingbirds but don't know much about them. It sounds like the King of the Roost has moved into your neighborhood!

I'd sure like to know what it is if you ever find out!

I never seen one that aggressive. They all at times are, as you said. But we haven't been regular at feeding. As a matter of fact I just got our little feeder out today, but don't know where to hang it.

Tell John to have a steady hand when he fires! LOL

hi!
I think that they are wonderful warrior birds and also very territorial! Is it possible for you to put out a couple of more feeders?

He sounds territorial. I didn't know hummingbirds were. INTERESTING.

Yours might just be a Rufous Hummingbird...there are so many kinds. Way up north we have a lot of Ruby-throated hummers but not yet. They'd still freeze their E-D-B-D wings with the cold and snow we still have.
Good luck mending fences after all the illegals action...mercy

He needs to go away. I have not fed the birds for a long time. We used to then we noticed we had mice in the house.
