Josie is A-Okay

After feeding the cattle we started our search. Driving along the fence line in an area I didn't think the calf would be and then cutting back toward the lane I spotted what I thought was her far across the lane and field. One little black and white animal that looked to be a calf and not a cow all alone in the tall grass. When we drove around to her we could see how she is compensating for not being able to see. She turns her head and perks her long ear in the direction of the noise she hears. I'm thinking she has caught on to our scent too along with that of her Mama. Mama came on over knowing John would feed her cubes. She completely trusts us with her calf now. Josie is following Mama by scent and sound but we saw today how Mama leaves the baby where she wants it to stay while she goes to graze or for water. She runs and then the baby can't keep up so stays where the Mama wants it until she comes back to let it nurse. As long as the baby can stay up with her it follows her scent and sound. We also saw the baby come to a dead mesquite bush and realized it needed to stop and go around it. It is learning, so amazing, and Mama is such a good Mama. We've been seeing a turkey hen so we think she is nesting. Hope we get to see some young ones. It had been forcasted that due to the drought there wouldn't be many baby turkeys. We don't see many quail this year. I saw one squirrel today and that is unusual to see on this ranch. The weather is nice these mornings driving with the windows down checking everything.

Oh I am so glad that Josie is okay. I do love how animals can adapt when they need to.

Isn't it amazing how animals know what to do, and how to handle certain situations?

Phew. It really is amazing, how the other senses take over for the loss of another...sounds more and more like Josie will be just fine.
