Lookin' For A Needle In Over 300 Acres

We have been afraid it would happen and today it did. Josie couldn't be found. She must have wondered off following her Mama. I hope where ever she is, she is in the shade because even though the breeze was blowing it was hot. We found the Mama right away grazing with the herd to the right of the lane as we drove in, but no baby. Mama was calm so we're sure the baby is okay, at least for now. John has been special feeding her so she is getting so tame she comes right to us. She even followed me to feed the turtles. I offered her a piece of bread, but she wasn't having any of that. She wanted range cubes and she did get some twice. We have to fool the other cows and get Mama to herself and then hide behind the truck or they will fight and take them away from her. They love those cubes. We found another new baby. I should say it found us. Butter isn't stingy with her calf. She brings it right up to join the crowd. It's light colored like it's Mama. I wonder if it will have the big horns like Butter has. If it stays hot and dry John will be having to sell some calves soon when they weigh more. We heard today the cowboy who always helps John work his cattle is hurt and not working right now. He burns pear (stickers off prickly pear) for his own cattle to eat everyday and last week he fell feeding them and cracked or broke some ribs. Wish I had a picture of this man. He is a true south Texas cowboy and I don't think he would take kindly to me asking if I could take his picture. Jack is a little man, dried up for his age. Wrinkled from the sun. Old dirty boots and hat. Knows his cattle and how to work them. Kindhearted but says it how he sees it. Feel better soon cowboy Jack.

I'm worried about Josie and hope she'll show up soon.
Cracked ribs are extremely painful. Hopefully Cowboy Jack is tough enough to mend quickly!

Josie, Josie, come out wherever you are...I hope she's in the shade too. Maybe tomorrow she will be back with her Mama.
I've had cracked ribs and that's worse than breaking them, I'm told.
I hope Cowboy mends fast.

It is funny to us neophytes, how you and John can tell by the demeanor of the mama, that the calf is probably okay.

Cowboy Jack must be a great guy, by the name alone. LOL

Hope he is better soon.

My heroes have always been cowboys, to quote a famous person.

I hope the little calf is okay - sounds like you are getting quite a few there. It is sad that you have to sell them. lol
Hope Cowboy Jack is okay.

I'm a little attached to Josie. I can see I am not alone in that.

Cracked ribs are nothing to fool with. Hope cowboy Jack is on the mend soon. And that you find Josie.
