To Market, To Market, To Buy A Fat Pig.

Home again, home again, jiggidy jig. Oh no wrong lyric, should read to market to sell three fat calves. Of course all the cattle were spread around  so we had to drive down the lane honking the horn, playing games with them. Making them think there is feed involved if they follow the honking to the pens. Then directing the animals John wants to sell into the pens and into the chute, then into the trailer. The trailer backing being my job. He lines it up with the chute and then he is in the pens from the other side while I back up to the chute where he can drive them in. I hit the chute poles kind of hard and got a reprimand on backing trailers slowly. Well "shoot" maybe my foot slipped. Got them all loaded fairly easy but they were not happy campers inside that small trailer. They were already getting a little salty down the lane out to the highway so John has to put the brakes on a little hard to get their attention to make them stop moving around so much. He only had to do that twice and we were at the auction barn. We drive the truck and trailer into a fenced area where a lady slaps a yellow tag with a number on each one after the gate is closed behind us. Seems the calves didn't like the color tag or the looks of the lady so they threw a fit and she never did get the tags on. Hope John get s the money for the correct calves as they were really good animals. They were acting so wild it felt like the whole truck and trailer was going to flip with me in it. I toyed with the idea of bolting out that door and climbing the iron fence. His calves usually doesn't act that bad when he takes them to market. Maybe it was the black
angus in them or the dog that walked by behind a worker. Oh well everything has a right to a bad day sometime, I guess.

Farmer Van took some calves to market today, we have some unhappy moms out in the field now. (We'll get to listen to that all night)

That has to be kind of sad for them - I am not a country girl am I?

Nah, they just didn't want to leave the lady who talks to them.
I always enjoy the stories from the cattle folk, ranchers themselves.

Haha! liked this post! AS a townie I confess I would be a bit scared with a few tons of panicky cowflesh stamping around me!

I am sure you all have heard this many times. I do not like bulls. I could never have backed up to a chute with a trailer in back.

You gave me a giggle...picturing you bolting and climbing the fence!

Hope John gets good money too and that you made it home safely!

Yes, they do....even the lady whose foot slipped! lol You said you liked my mom's dress she wore to my son's wedding. She called me and asked if she could wear that. She bought that at Dillard's about 10 years ago....after a lot of encouragement from my daughter and me. We kept telling her we LOVED that dress....she kept saying she just didn't know. Glad she gave into us. I'll let her know you want it. :)
