The Pungent Smell Of The Auction Yard

It's a combination of several things that makes up the odor of the cattle auction. Some women wouldn't like it and probably some men too. To us it is just a part of buying, selling, and raising cattle. With the high temps with no rain people are selling a lot of cattle so the yard was already full when we got there with five large calves at nine. The mooing was deafening, the cattle don't know why they are out of their usual environment. They don't know why they are there or where they are going. John thinks his calves will go to east Texas where the grass is greener. The five calves were well behaved on their 16 mile ride to the auction. They didn't act up like the last load did. John's calves are all usually tame and do act nice. No he didn't sell Josie the blind calf, at least not yet. I would like for him to keep her to see how she would react at the birth of a calf. I think by instinct, smell, and hearing she could do a good job. The picture here doesn't represent the calves he is selling today. The calves are larger and the grass is not that green except where he is running water. We were able to get home before the real heat hits today.

Believe it or not, I used to attend the cattle auctions in San Angelo. I didn't know much about it, but it was interesting.

The smell? A farmer I knew well said it was the smell of money! (smile). At the Auctions in Missouri they did all livestock, including pigs. I saw one farmer buy a small Pig. Opened the back door of his Cadillac and put it on the back seat!

Every time I think of the pig in the back seat I think of you and John in the pickup and him holding the calf. That is a sight in my mind.

It seems it would be hard to let them go but I suppose you do get used to it.
