Treking Down Under The Bridge

John didn't have much to do at the ranch this morning. Feed the cows and check the mamas. They weren't too upset. One of the calves was bought by someone we know so it won't go to slaughter. He has a ranch and knows a good calf when he sees it. I used to line dance with his wife so that makes that one all good. We decided to walk down under the bridge as it was early and cool. You would be surprised at what you see under there. John wanted to show me how he fixed the fence where Elsie the Jersey got out. She had met us coming down the lane and was special fed. At one time she was feeding three calves. Her own and two others stealing milk and she was letting them. We saw several cottontails at different places and one jackrabbit. He/she was so cute trying to hide from us. It slouched down in the tall dead grass with it's long ears pulled down next to it's head thinking we couldn't see it. We could but we didn't jinx it's game. I'm so glad the rabbits are coming back. We don't have renters who like to shoot everything in sight like some have. We don't see the wild hogs around anymore either. So the rattlesnake will probably start to come back too. This ranch is known for rattlesnakes and even around the farm house. We didn't see any ducks or turkeys but we did see a large deer on the back forty. It was in the same place we saw it another day. It was large and had high horns so it may have been an exotic from next ranch over. When it ran along the deer proof fence I couldn't see a white tail flagging and we don't see deer there usually so it could have been another escapee. It was a nice morning and we were able to get home before the 105 degree hits.

So glad that deer escaped! I hope they don't find it and take it back in!!! Do the hogs EAT rattlesnake, or do they tromp them to death? I guess the wild hogs are good for something if they keep rattlers away!

Yes Davis the wild hogs do eat rattlesnakes. We lived on the ranch when the wild hogs started invading south Texas and we trapped them to sell to a company in Devine, Texas who shipped the meat all over.

I can see the report now: SPOTTED, HOMELESS COUPLE UNDER THE BRIDGE!
Glad you had a light day. I meant to mention we saw a couple Jack rabbits when down at Medina lake and they were my first Jacks. Those really are big ears compared to their body..

I know you guys stay on your toes with the Rattlesnake history.

I remember when I lived in Tucson, out for my morning walk I ran into a coyote which began following me for a while...thank goodness it made an exit back into the desert area. But as I rounded the corner of the block, just in the neighborhood street was a ginormous diamondback rattler.

I was ready to put the house on the market that very day. LOL
