Turkey Pear

This type cacti is plentiful here in south Texas but not as much so as prickly pear. The wild turkeys eat the red berries and John calls it turkey pear. Good association, wouldn't you say? I don't know if other people call it by that name and I doubt that is the real name. It is kind of pretty when the berries are on so once I dug up one plant and planted it in my yard. It didn't have a home there for very long as the tiny stickers are more pesty then prickly pear. Maybe some of you other Texas girls will tell me if these grow on your place and what you think of them. OUCH! Is what I say.

I'm not much of a fan of the cacti. I do love to see them and they always remind me of the Southwest.
The Cacti was my mom's favorite flora.
When she could find one with few BIG stickers, she decorated it at Christmas with jelly beans and jelly candy (I cannot recall the name of the little candies now).
I always love the stories of Texas.

Never saw them before. Kind of interesting though.

We have them here. I've taken a few photos of them but not many. It is known as a pencil and or Christmas cactus...and that isn't from me but the books, lol. I think John's name sounds good if the turkey's eat them. I've never seen anything eat them but they are a pain to clean up out of a fence row.

Gee I would not have guessed that is a cactus. Unusual.
