Big Red Ants

I avoid these ant beds like the plague. When I was A kid I seemed to always be getting stung by one. Their sting is painful and I would feel bad and feverish. The ranch has these beds all over. John used to carry poison to try to kill them out until one of the land ladies told him the Horny Toads eat them. Too bad we couldn't import a load of them in. They would have plenty of food. We haven't seen a Horny Toad in about three years and hadn't seen one for years before that but I always look for them. I also keep an eye out for Big Red Ant beds to make sure I don't step on their property.

We have fire ants here in SoCal. When I'm walking, I always steer her away from the mounds.

It is amazing how the ants, REd and fire ants, are traveling North. I remember on the EAst coast when they were only in Florida, over the years we traveled WE saw them ove to Georgia then SC and now NOrth CArolina is full of them. I imagine they are up past VA now.
We have some REd ants, but our problem is the Fire ant.

I have plenty of those two along the edge of my yard. I try keeping some kind of ant killer handy.

When I lived in San Angelo the yard was filled with fire ants. Their bite was almost as bad as a bee sting.

We don't have fire ants that bad,
But I'm fighting the other kind and having a time keeping sugar ants out of the house.

We have lots of fire ants here in East Texas. I have found a good powder but I think it just causes them to shut down one hole and find another. I seem to attract them. I always manage to get into ants when I'm working in the yard. They seem to be extremely plentiful this year, I suppose because of all the rain we've had.
