We Have A New Pet

A buzzard has taken up residence in one of the farm house sheds not real far from the back door. When we drive down the lane to feed the cows it flys out but doesn't leave. It isn't too afraid of us or it is hatching eggs in there or has babies in there and is staying to protect them. It lands on the windmill or a tree to perch and stretch it's wings. Several years ago John owned a small ranch south of town with an old run down house and chicken coop. One day we went out to find two buzzard eggs in the floor of the kitchen. Yuck! John ran the Mama out and boarded up the windows. Next time we went out she had layed two more eggs in the chicken coop. We left them there and checked on them from time to time. They hatched and that was the first time I had seen a baby buzzard. They were fuzzy and kind of yellow. As they grew two or three long black feathers emerged toward the back of their body until they had all their black slick feathers and finally one day they were gone for good. It was an interesting experience. I wouldn't mind to watch baby buzzards again. When I get a chance I'll have to ask the young couple who lives out there how they feel. They may not want them around. I was able to make a video for Facebook but I'm not experienced in videos on Blogs.

That would be interesting. I don't see them as a threat as they just like dead things or so I am told. I would be interested in how they parented, all I ever see are the big ones flapping about. They do a good job of cleaning up all the road kills, but they are so ugly ...

Awwwwwwww, I'd love to see it the video, but don't do facebook. Maybe you can just post the link to it? Is it youtube?

Oh well...
Enjoyed reading this. I would've never dreamed the chicks were 'yellow'. Hmmm.

I wouldn't have expected them to be yellow, but I guess a lot of baby fowl are. Would be interesting to watch them grow. Take care, Sheila

YELLOW! anyway I admire the Buzzard as they soar. It is an ugly bird up close, but a very important part of nature. They have beautiful strong wings. And the black dude starts off yellow. mmmmmmm

You B and interesting lady, Cowgirl!
