You Never Miss The Water Until The Well Runs Dry

Or you never miss the electricity until the power goes off. The hottest part of the day ours went off and stayed off for four hours. We made a trip to Walmart to buy a few things to cook King Ranch Chicken tomorrow. It was cool in there so we shopped slowly. Haven't made that dish in years. Got the idea from a friend telling me about she and her friend eating what they called King Ranch Chicken at a restaurant. I don't know if she meant she had never heard of it or if it didn't taste as it should. Anyway I'm going to improvise because I can't find my recipe. Power still wasn't on so we made a trip to Whataburger for a Patty Melt. We drug out feet there and sopped up their cool air. When we came home some neighbors were in their yard trying to find some cool air. Their youngest always wants to give us food. He must think old people look hungry. I told him we didn't need anything we just had a Patty Melt. Yesterday when we were struggling with a large box to cut it in pieces to fit it in the garbage can he brought a bag with cold water, cut up apples, and candy. He told me this is a snack for you working so hard. We are so lucky to have good neighbors and their kids. Now we are trying to cool our rooms back off and the food in the fridge, enjoying the TV and computer. When the big power company truck passed by we gave him the thumbs up sign and he signaled back. Thank goodness for men who work on Friday late.

Never heard of King Ranch Chicken. If it's made with ranch dressing, DH wouldn't eat it. I never understood how someone can discount something because of an ingredient.
Happy to hear you were only out of power for 4 hours, it could have been worse. It's hard to have it go out though, isn't it? I hope everything has cooled off by now.
Take care now!

No Sharon King Ranch Chicken doesn't have Ranch Dressing in it. It is named after the King Ranch south of here I believe. It has such ingrediants as Rotel tomatoes with green chilies, Monterrey Jack cheese, tortillias etc,

The power always seems to go off on the hottest days...or the coldest days. Sometimes I think the Power Gods plan it that way. Anyway, I'm glad your power is back on.

I love food from Whataburger and I really miss it. I haven't seen any Whataburgers here in TN.

I was reading the messages - I too was raised without a/c too - now I wonder how I did it! I am glad it went back on!

I remember once you mentioned that John said in later life you 2 would move to a hotel. I hope that if the air was off too long, the 2 of you would do that on a temporary basis. You've not been well & you need to be a little self-indulgent once in a while.

Maybe the neighbors find you to be a lovely woman who they want to take a little extra care of now that she isn't feeling so well.

We have learned to be very prepared for no power, which happens periodically after a bad storm -- 5 gallon pails of water to flush the toilet (no electricity, no well, no water), a generator to keep the freezer going and run the microwave, a Coleman stove to cook on. And how very quiet the house is with no gadgets running.

I had never heard of King Ranch chicken, but have been looking it up...not bad.

Yes, you are blessed to have such thoughtful neighbors!

Why does that happen when you need the power?!!! I would be doing the same as you two did...go to where there IS power and shop/dine!

But, in your comment for me you said you got rain? Lucky!!! Not so here.

Our power was off for an hour a few weeks ago. I saw our electric coop linemen were working down at the transfer station. So glad it wasn't longer as it sure is hot outside. We bought a generator last year to run our freezers if we lose power for an extended amount of time, like a hurricane. We have been having steers butchered and love having freezers full of beef but don't want to lose all that meat either. Glad you all survived at Walmart and Whataburger.

Glad you didn't have to go any longer than you did without power!
