Happy 50th Birthday Barbie

Happy birthday Barbie Roberts as in Barbie doll fame. You've held up well girl, not gained a pound or donned a wrinkle. In my years growing up we didn't have anything like a Barbie doll. If we were lucky enough to have a doll it was a baby doll. A doll we fed, rocked, and changed it's diapers for that is mostly what we expected to do. Get married and have babies. When my girls were growing up they could have better expectations. They could go to college, have a career, be a model, anything they set their mind to do. They wanted Barbie dolls to dress, to pretend to be anything they chose. My girls still have their Barbie dolls. The beautiful wedding dresses their aunt made in case you married Ken and you may have for all I know. They have the pink wardrobes their Dad made with dorrs that open up to reveal a mirror on one side for you to primp and preen. Tiny drawers on bottom to store your shoes and accessories. A metal pull out rack for tiny hangers to hang all your different clothes on. One year for Christmas Leah wanted a Barbie camper so badly. Santa brought it and she still has it in mint condition, still in the box. Now I see by the news little girls in China admire you. I see there is a whole Barbie store with everything imaginable for you. You've done quite well Barbie. Congratulations and Happy Birthday.

I use to rip my cousins' dolls heads off or shave their heads

I was never really into dolls much so I never had a Barbie. I sure wish I had one of the originals now though. I've heard they are worth a lot of money.

Oh, I had a barbie camper too, but don't have it anymore. My girls had them but I don't think they were into them as much as my generation. Take care, Sheila

I love you metaphore of the dolls and how little girsl looked at them. I have never thought of that. Of course, you are just one smart cookie, even if you changed the diapers and fed the dolls. I liked the entry, even though I don't think I ever even held a Barbie, ' cept maybe Sherry.

Paula, like you, I only had baby dolls...Never wanted anything else...well except a toy tractor to ride ( never got it! lol) I saw in the news where folks are all up in arms because Barbie now has little tatoos that girls can stick on her; they say it may damage the kids personalities etc....To me, Barbie having tatoos is no different than we children of the country playing cowboys and indians...or cops and robbers...SOMEONE had to be the bad guy and SOMEONE had to get klilled or wounded...and we turned out okay!!! lol
Your little girls were very lucky!
love ya,
carlene

I was like you Paula too.My Grandaughter who is seventeen this year has all her Barbie things from being a little girl. They are all boxed as well. She saved them for her little sister who is seven this year but sis was never a dolly fan,so they are up the loft now in storage LOL.I wonder how many pound I and Grandad spent on those items LOL!!I bet there arn't many more Barbies who are shut away looking like new in the dark in there original boxes? I'll say "A Happy Birthday" too.

I had some knock off type Barbies, but I believe when I was little I thought they were The Barbie. Then a friend of my parents gave me a Barbie Runway for my dolls and a real Barbie. I was hooked for a while. I had them doing the Miss America waltz, since the Barbie Runway was motorized. My Mom was anti-Barbie but let me enjoy it. Then a few years later she gave me books by feminists lol. ~Mary

My younger sister was the one into Barbie dolls. She always wanted to play Barbies, but I never really liked to for very long. My thing was playing with my stuffed animals, having tea parties with them! ;)
