Tall Hair

I've seen some big hair in my life but this hair I'm writing about is tall hair as in reaching for the ceiling. John's sister in Alaska sent us a bunch of family pictures so Sunday afternoon I brought them up on my computer and we looked at them. As I've said before John came from a large family and seven of them were girls. Beautiful girls. One is even a retired model and two others could have been with thier looks and figures. One of the picture was of two of his sister together and they had the tallest hair I've ever seen in my born days. Dark, shiny hair, beautiful hair and make-up but how did they get that hair up that tall and it looked as if it would not have fallen if it was in a storm. I know you can get something called a bumpit now to put under the top of your hair to raise it but I don't think they had that back then and I don't think they teased hair back then and I'm sure they didn't have hair spray but I think they did use something called laquor (not liquer) and probably mispelled. Their hair was soooo tall that they had three or four waves across the tall part. I know how the waves were made back then. They took a comb and zig zagged the hair and put a metal wave clamp in place until the hair dried and wah la a wave but how did they get it up in the air like that is beyond me. I know you are going to say show the picture and I would love to, but his model sister lives out of state and I have never met her. From what I've heard maybe its better I don't. Just take my word for it these girls could have held their own with any movie star.

Sounds like these pictures are from the 1980's? I had some Huge hair back then, and they way I got it so big was a perm, curling iron and tons and tons of hair gel and Aqua net. I could of been in a hurricane and my hair would not of moved...LOL

We'll have to use our imagination on this one...it can be fun looking back at old pictures. Hope you are having a nice day and staying out of the heat. Take care, Sheila

You know what, I don't think any of us girls with the exception of the one that had polio ever had enough hair to be tall. Moms hair came to her waist and she wore it in a bun. I remember with my sisters they fingerwaved their hair with some gunk. Me, I got the old fashioned curling iron heated in a kerosene lamp for school occasions. Never had electricity till I moved in with my sister who lived in Lincoln when I needed to go to Jr. High. Wow, I am old!!!

Someone was just saying their grandmother used to put watered down honey in her hair to hold it. I said maybe that is why they called them bee hives...LOL. I bet it was funny to see such tall hair. I remember when I was in beauty school to be a hairdresser (in another life) we had to do finger waves. They were so hard to get right and to me so old fashioned. I never did get why we had to do them. Too bad you can't post the pictures for us. :(

Hi Paula I myself have pictures where I wore my hair like this LOL He-He we have laughed hours over them hairstyles me and my sisters over the years, looking over old photographs of ourselves.Well it was all the rage then .Everyone would see who could get there hair the highest or tallest as you say He-He.It was done by a method of what was called backcombing. You took the legnth of hair and drew the comb backwards down the hair towards the scalp and this made it stand up.Then when you reached the height you liked it you combed the loose hair over this backcombing into the style required.Yes it was called the Bee Hive as it looked like the shape of one Haaaaaaaaa.I am Rolling Over now laughing. The finished style was layered with Hair laquer until stiff Haaaaaaa.Like your other friend said no Hurricane could move it.It didn't half hurt though when you had to comb it all out as the backcombing caused knots in the hair.OUCH my head used to tingle and sting LOL!!Haaaaaaaa.Thanx for the laugh and the memories.Take Care God Bless Kath xx

Wellllll, this thing has kept my comment behind a pile of Hair or something. I lost you and the comment.
I love to look at the old pictures. The changes in styles are amazing. But I have seen in history some of the pictures from the 1600's and some of those ladies had hair piled high.
Figure out how to get them scanned and on the blog. HA! you got us hanging on the descriptions.
