The Model Cow

We had to go round the cattle up this morning to lead them up to the pens where John had put out salt and meal for them to add to the grass they are grazing on. When I say rounded up I don't mean on horses or on foot. I mean from the pick-up truck. We always banter back and forth about what we think the cows are saying or thinking. All the cows were nodding their heads back and forth as they bounced up and down on their hoves as they walked. We noticed one cow who was not nodding her head. I told John I think she has had model training and has walked around with a book on her head. we are still having spring one day and fall the next. It was really cool this morning after a little rain last night. When we went to the back forty we saw three wild turkeys. Guess they had been checking out the deer feeders to see if there was any corn left. When they heard the truck they started to run along the tall fence. When they got to the corner the two females flew over. The big old gobbler just kept pacing along the fence and seemed to have forgotten he could fly over. When I got out of the truck his memory came to him and he flew over and was gone. John pointed out the prickly pear is loaded with pear apples and not making many new leaves. He says this is a sign of a dry year. Seems we're in a dry year most years. Finally got to see the tiny calf. It's Mama isn't so picky now and it's doing fine, just a small calf. There are two that are my favorites though. They are light in color and have marking in white on their faces. They are not twins but look alike and always stay together. They were born a day apart of different Mothers and for some reason have bonded.

Calves do seem to choose "best friends".

And you are not having Turkey for dinner? What kind of deal is that? LOL
I betcha Rowdy Yates would have loved rounding them up and moving them out in the pick up! Head 'em up and move 'em out. (I used to love that kind of talk!)
Take care.

At least that is a model you cannot complain is underweight.

I love that they bonded. ~Mary

rounding cattle with the pick-up is my speed. There was a day, tho, that I loved riding the horses. I think I'd have a time getting up and going now with this lame body.
Glad to hear the calf is doing OK and has a playmate. I hope the prickly pear develops some leaves. Maybe a rain dance is in order. or a turkey trot.
Love reading here.
