Strange Places To Live

I thought of a story a lady told me a few years ago after reading the blog Kathy Goes A Ramblin'. Kathy posted a picture of a beautiful building which was a jail at one time with living quarters for the sheriff and a gallows on the third floor. The lady told me of her Dad passing away when she was young. They were of a religion that frowned on marrying outside of their religion so her mother finally met a man who suited that bill. The only drawback, he owned a funeral home and had an apartment to the side but connected to the funeral home. Her mother did marry him and she and her daughter moved into the apartment with her mother's new husband. She said it took a little getting used to eating dinner and knowing there was a dead body on the other side of the wall. Have you ever known anyone to live in a place that is or was a little different ?

I moved Sherry into a remodeled Chicken house in Missouri once. I remember you mentioned 'Fatty' from your youth.
Well Fat Myers and his family lived upstairs over their funeral home. Fat was a great guy. His wife was my insurance lady.

We live in a motor home, some folk think that is strange. (SMILE)

my farrier lived in an apartment above a horse barn, but that suited him really well. :) i think the folks who redo churches into homes must have a unique place to live in.

I seem to remember that in many small towns that was the case. And I'm reminded of the TV show a few years back, "Six Feet Under," about a family in California who lived on the premises. Being needed 24/7 and all days of the week made living on site much easier. I once dated a boy in high school whose family owned the local mortuary and that's where they lived. Re the indoor gallows in the jail in my post of yesterday, my thought about the matter was: Well, at least they didn't have public hangings like so many places here did back in the 1800s!

We had friends who lived above a funeral home, and I always thought that was a bit creepy. But when we visited them, I didn't ever feel weird about where we were. I guess you just get used to it.

One of my friends in elementary school lived in an old Catholic Church that had been abandoned and refurbished.

I can't think of anything or anyWHERE someone lived that was 'strange'...but I can tell you a short story...

My dad used to drive a hearse. He was 'delivering' a body from some small town in Nebraska at the time...to a cemetery several miles away. The last time too. As he drove down the highway, the coffin slid from the back of the hearse to the front where he was driving...all by itself. He never EVER drove a hearse again. LOL

Near the end of WW2, my mother and I lived in a church that was made into apartments. Sometimes I thought that was kind of creep because of all the dead bodies that were buried from there. It was before funeral homes and before cremation was popular.
