Beware The Rattlers Are Out!

Earlier today a friend and I were talking about people posing their kids and taking pictures in the wildflowers on the sides of the road. She said I wonder if the city people think to watch for rattlesnakes. I said and it is hot enough for them to be out already. When fence builder came in today he brought a rattlesnake he had killed near the farm house in the fence line in cactus where he was working. This property is known for rattlesnakes and in the yard too. I think they live under the house because people have seen them or killed them by the step. This one was fat and healthy with about five rattles. He had it stuffed down in a box so it was hard to tell for sure how many rattles and how long it was. He said he buried the head with the dangerous fangs. Yesterday we ran out (no we didn't run, we drove) out to check things out but I really wanted to try feeding the turtles some lettuce (no Jack I didn't steal it from John's stash. It was from a sandwich I ate at the hospital cafeteria). Well I can tell you my turtles don't like lettuce. The ignored, they swam past it, and they wouldn't even taste it. I felt bad because I had called them up and then didn't have anything else to feed them.

I'm always nervous about Rattlesnakes where we live. I've never seen one, but I know they're around. We have woods that come right up to the back of the house.

So they con't like a salad!!! That is surprising to me.
Was he gonna cook the rattler? I killed one in Montana, Sherry and I walked on, then I thought I am going back and get that sucker and cook it, I have never had rattler. When I turned, an Eagle was flying off with my supper, so I still haven't eaten Rattler.

I ain't crazy about rattlers, I think the only good one is a dead one in my opinion.

I agree with Jack, the only good snake (of any kind) is a dead one. I have never seen a rattler in this part of Tx. We have copperheads, and water moccasins around here, as far as poisonous snakes. Also have the racers that will stand up and chase you, though I have never seen one of the racers, only heard of them out by Lake Bob Sandlin. I don't like any snakes!!

And that's exactly why I stop hiking when it gets hot here in SoCal.

- An amazing mix of ignorance and pride.

I don't like any snake but have never really been in country where rattlers are and do not want to be.

Yikes! Scary!!
Did I tell you I stop now all the time to feed the turtles at the pond every time I go to my mother's house - all because of my friend the turtle whisperer.
Have a wonderful Easter Paula :-)

And here I am, one who was born and raised in a town that just celebrated it's 50th year of rattlesnake rodeos...ha. But no, I don't like to see any kind of snake crawling around in my yard. But I have eaten rattlesnake (see previous mention on rattlesnake rodeo)... :) Take care, Sheila

I don't worry too much about rattlers but I always watch whee I'm going. I've spooked a few in my time and they don't take too well with it. By the way, they don't always rattle before they strike.

I used to feed my turtles with dry cat food. They like it real well.

Happy Easter
Jimmy

Oh my gosh, rattlesnakes!!! I wouldn't make it living there, I'm so petrified of the mice here that a rattlesnake phobia would put me right over the top! Be careful!
Happy Easter!!

Probably many of the city dwellers don't think of snakes, unless thier roots were in the country. Do folks out west ever try using a sulphur line around their place to turn back snakes? My sister-in-law makes one around her house every year. Pete's already killed a water mocassin here. Never mind the temp has never been above 80 as yet. Here we have timber rattlers, water mocassins and copperheads. We don't do much in the woods in the summer. For one thing almost impossible to keep mosquitos at bay. But we never venture into the woods without a gun somewhere to shoot a snake.

Rattlers, heck, any snake, gives me the willies. One of the rockpiles by our friends in Gorman, is full of them. Another TX friend once got struck by a copperhead while cleaning out a piece of farm machinery. It put him in the hospital for two weeks. I have to agree with Jack too...only good snake, is a dead snake. Sorry you missed a meal, Jack, but you gotta be faster and smarter than an Eagle.

Bless Your Easter Paula and John

They are very useful animals -- too bad they are so scary! We don't have them in these parts, but Copperheads are seen from time to time.
