A Disappointing Gift

I'm not an ungrateful person but once I received a Christmas gift from my now deceased husband that was just a major disappointment. I thought of it today because someone here was getting an electric pressure cooker and she was excited about it. I was young and not married too long but pregnant with my first daughter. Christmas morning my husband gave me a pressure cooker. I didn't want a pressure cooker, I wanted something more personal. A piece of jewelry, a blouse?  Mel's sister-in-law's Dad was selling pressure cookers so she took it on herself to convince Mel I really needed a pressure cooker and could even use it to sterilize the baby bottles when my baby was born. Wrong! The bottles were too tall to fit in the pressure cooker so out went that idea. We still had to go buy a bottle sterilizer. I cooked but not interested in canning. I may have used that gift one or two times in my lifetime. It just took up space for years until I realized I hated that thing and didn't even want it around. I bet some lady still has that heavy gift and was grateful to buy it at Goodwill. Mel finally got the message and bought me some diamond ear studs on Christmas. Don't get me wrong I don't expect expensive gifts every year but just once was nice and I still have them.

I just last year got rid of a clock Roger got me when we were young that I never liked, and he was slightly offended. LOL I told him I had bought him I could not name you the expensive guns/pistols and I bet him he has not got a single one...the clock cost about $30 back in the late 1970's...so get over it!

It doesn't always pay to take someone's advice on gifts YOU should give. Yep, imma betting Mel kicked himself a couple a times. Yep, there are times us Brilliant men just Ain't very smart! ;-)

I still have two older pressure cookers I need to give away or throw away. I bought the newer electric ones and love them yes I bought two, lol. They are lighter and so much easy. I have them in two sizes and when I cook I can cook a meal in the cookers. Quick and easy, lol. Grover has never bought me anything that I can remember, but if he did it would sure be a surprise, He always told me to get what I wanted. Take care

Oh, so sorry about that. Things for the house aren't really gifts unless they are frivolous - and you really want it. DH went into the dog house once over an electric can opener, nope, he is never going to live that one down!

Husbands generally require a little training! I've been missing in action for a while, so hope to visit again soon.

I can understand your disappointment. The last thing I'd ever want is a pressure cooker.

There is enough pressure in the world. Diamonds are more..eh...useful :).

I agree, who needs a pressure cooker. The earrings were a treasured gift, I'm sure.

This is in response to your saying you guys drove and didn't know exactly where you were but just knew you would eventually come to a road you would know....that is exactly how we did travel. Since Roger's stroke, we have went quite as free wheeling...I am wondering if I will ever feel safe enough to do that again.

It took a little while for Thomas to realize that a gift on a special day might be more appreciated (at the beginning of our marriage, that is) if it were of a personal nature and not something to do with fishing or hunting. lol A few years ago, however, on the day of our anniversary, we just happened to be grocery shopping together, and I saw a very nice potato peeler for a good sale price. I bought it and then later joked that it was my "anniversary gift." He was appalled and quickly pointed out that he'd gotten me something much nicer than that. But I have to say, I still use that peeler, and it is the best and sharpest potato peeler I've ever owned. If we'd been newly married and expecting a baby at the time, though, I would NOT have wanted anything that practical!

I understand, Paula. And I'm sure Mel really thought it was a great idea and had in his heart to please you, make things easier on you. I've never been much of a jewelry gal. I used to love to get flowers, but later in life I fine it a waste. My all time favorite gift from Pete was a set of wheels he got for my 1979 Mustang. Before we were married, I had seen it done in a Hot Rod magazine, but when I had took it to Modica Bros. they told me it couldn't be done. Well, Pete knew this made me very sad. He took it up there, told them their wheels had been on one in the magazine and they figured out how to do it. (Ain't it just like a man to only listen to a man!?) Then he surprised me with it at work for my birthday. Modica Bros. was so proud of how it turned put that they took pictures and left them up for thirty years!!!

I will take diamonds any day! Besides, as you say MUCH more personal.
